13 Best Ski-Country Hot Springs
After a day of skiing, nothing feels better than a steamy soak in a tub. Except maybe a steamy soak in an all-natural, outdoor hot spring, which also helps eliminate fatigue, promote blood circulation, and loosen muscles and joints. We've searched high and low for the 13 best hot springs near ski towns.

#1 Strawberry Park Hot Springs; Steamboat Springs, Colorado
A steep, winding, unpaved road from Steamboat Springs leads you to Strawberry hot springs, and from November 1 to May 1, four wheel drive or chains is required (the Colorado State Patrol is known for ticketing cars that aren’t prepared). Parking at Strawberry is limited, so consider the shuttle. Try Sweet Pea Tours, which will take you the 25 minutes from Steamboat to the springs, for $40 per adult. A day at Strawberry is $10 per person and the pools are cleaned and drained once a week. (*Clothing optional after dark, no glass or cans)

“I can do anything you can do!” is the perfect attitude to have in the winter in Steamboat Springs where kids can do anything they set their minds to. In addition to improving their skiing and riding skills on the mountain, they can also explore many more activities around town from snowshoeing on local trails, ice skating at Howelsen Ice Arena, snow tubing or horseback riding. Some other favorites include Hitchens Brothers’ Wednesday Night Ski Jumping (Jan. 27, Feb. 24 & Mar. 17) where kids of all ages can try launching off of ski jumps at Howelsen Hill with Steamboat’s Nordic competitors, experiencing the life of an Iditarod racer on a dog sled tour or ice fishing at the Stagecoach Reservoir. For more fun, visit the water slides at Old Town Hot Springs or stop into the soda parlor at Lyons Drug for a root beer float. With all there is do to for kids in Steamboat Springs, mom and dad will be the ones trying to keep up!

We were totally surprised at how much snow had fallen over night and while we were skinning up the mountain on Saturday - - it was definitely knee to thigh deep and the turns were well worth the effort! We cheated a little bit and used snowmobiles to climb up to the base of Hahn's Peak - - and then we skinned the rest of the way to treeline. We skied the south/south-west side of this mtn and made 2 laps of a little over 1,000 feet each before calling it a day. We were not able to enjoy any views during our trip - everything was socked in with the Snow storm - but we will back again on a blue bird day!

Option #2 would be to skin/snowshoe/hike to the quarry on Emerald Mtn (the mtn above Howelsen Hill) where you will be able to view both the fireworks and the torchlight parade from an unobstructed view across town (too far to see people, but you will see everything that is lit up). Give yourself 30-45 minutes to get to both of these vantage points - and enjoy the show!

SPRINT TORCHLIGHT PARADES & FIREWORKS
December 31, 2009

The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School treats tourists and locals to spectacular on-snow parades down the mountain lit only by torches. The parades are in celebration of a holiday or local event throughout the season. In conjunction with the torchlight parades, a fireworks display will illuminate the sky providing a perfect ending to the evening. Again this year, the young ones get a chance to ski down the mountain and join in the excitement as a special finale to the Desperados Ski Week program. The Desperados Torchlight Parade will also be December 31st.

<a10:updated>2009-12-26T21:18:01-05:00</a10:updated>

An Early Gift From Santa in Steamboat Springs

Well I forgot to check the Mtn temps this morning (5 degrees) . . . so a few more layers would have helped, but it was nice to see some measurable snow on the mountain (if you round up, it was a foot of fresh!). I am sure all the people visiting Steamboat Springs this week enjoyed their turns today!

Steamboat was rated #1 in Tree Skiing by Skiing Magazine - here is the article below:

The champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.

Take a couple tree laps during a Steamboat storm, and you’ll quickly understand why the term “champagne powder” was coined there. Start off your tasting tour on the gentle pitches of the Twilight Glades. It’s sort of like a swig from a bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil—the experience is soft yet intensely flavored and only mildly desperate. Wipe your face on your sleeve and make your way over to the Pony Express lift to build up your tolerance. The tighter pines will force your turns to be short and sweet, like the taste of blanc de noir sucked through a Slurpee straw. After a few more runs, the champagne-pow buzz kicks in. You might fall on your ass more than 20 times trying to get down Morningside’s hairy chutes, but the champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.

When You Go…
Only a short walk from the gondola, your first après stop should be the Gondola Pub & Grill for cheap beers and delicious ribs. [2305 Mount Werner Circle #1]

Nurse your leg burn at one of the 150-plus natural springs in the area. But watch out for the ones hot enough to poach an egg. [steamboat springs.net]

Hire an experienced guide and bomb through untouched backcountry terrain—and live to tell about it. [Steamboat Powdercats; steamboatpowdercats.com]

Sam Elliott would be proud. Head to F.M. Light & Sons to buy the ultimate cowboy hat in the area’s oldest retail store. [830 Lincoln Ave.]
