Steamboat Ski Resort gets dumped on . . . 34 Inches in 30 hours!

It is no secret that there has been a lack of Snow in the Western States this year, and just when we started to think about raft trips, mountain biking in Utah and spending time on the beach . . . the snow Gods finally woke up and remembered what their job was!! Not sure if they had been sleeping the past few months, or decided they were going to share our white fluffy goodness with Europe and British Columbia or someone just needed to have a little better snow dance to open up the bucket of Love from above . . . but holy powder stashes batman . . . Steamboat Ski Resort woke up to 34 inches of the good stuff this morning, all falling within the past 30 hours. The total within 24 hours was 27 inches, which broke the old record of cumulative snowfall in a 24 hour period.

The last few weeks have reminded us all about why we live in Ski Town USA (or make you jealous that you don't) . . . with over 6 feet of snow falling during the month of February, the powder stashes have been bottomless.

New Smartphone App from Alpine Replay gives skiers and snowboarders a personal stats tracker at over 1,000 ski resorts!

Ever brag to your ski buddies about that huge air you got when you hucked yourself off that 20 foot (was it really 5ft) cliff when skiing the back bowls? Do you tend to inflate the number of ski days you have in a year or how many runs you took before your wimpy legs begged for mercy and you had to call it a day? There are some pretty cool apps coming out that allow you track everything from vertical feet skied, top speed, calories burned, even how much air you got (or did not get) off that jump. The best thing is that you can compete with your friends and family and ultimately determine who is truly king of the hill!

If you have skied at any one of the Vail Resorts in the past two years, you have heard about their Epix Mix application that allows skiers and snowboarders to keep track of their ski days, vertical feet skied and earn pins throughout the ski season. The data is collected from RFID chips located in the season passes for each skier, so when your pass is scanned at the Keystone Ski Resort, the tracking begins. They have also added a new feature this year where the on mountain photographers can scan your pass and take pictures of you on the mountain, these pictures will then be tied to your pass and can be shown on facebook and other social applications (or purchased - - does anyone do that anymore?).

That is all pretty cool, but if you are not skiing at a Vail owned Ski Resort, or if you only have a daily lift ticket to the resort, the technology does not work. So if you plan on skiing Copper, Wolf Creek, Loveland, the Steamboat Ski Resort or anywhere else in the world, keeping track of your ski day can be a little more cumbersome. That was until I came across this recently launched Smartphone app called Alpine Replay available on either iPhone or Android. The technology behind the app comes from a guy who used to be the CTO at Magellan Navigation (Anatole Lokshin) and his son David Lokshin, an avid snowboarder who probably inherited some smarts from his pops!

This app works at any resort in the world (over 1,000 resorts), you dont need a season pass for it too work, and the data is largely driven off the GPS function from your phone (battery usage might be a problem). It can track your entire day on the mountain, the exact runs you took, the exact lifts you were on, how fast you were going, how far you jumped off that cliff, calories burned, etc.! Then at the end of the day, you can compare your stats versus your friend and ultimately determine who gets the coveted Glen Plake award!

Tamar Jacoby is known primarily for her writing on immigration-related issues.

A native of New York City, Ms. Jacoby graduated from Yale University in 1976, after which she became a staffer on the New York Review of Books. From 1981 to 1987 she served as a deputy editor of the op-ed page of The New York Times, and from 1987 to 1989 as a senior writer and justice editor at Newsweek. She has also been assistant to the editor at the New York Review of Books.

Her writing with regard to race relations and immigration has been published in numerous publications, including Commentary, Dissent, The Nation, The New Republic, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times Book Review, among other journals of political thought and newspapers of national or regional scope.

The Wild West Relay is a 200-mile distance team running relay race adventure in Colorado designed for runners of all abilities. The Eight Annual running of the Wild West Relay will be Friday - Saturday, August 12th - 13th, 2011.

This Colorado relay race begins by the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Fort Collins, and finishes in the beautiful ski and summer resort town of Steamboat Springs. Held on open public roads, much of this very scenic and remote course runs through National Forests or on dirt roads. The route winds through Roosevelt, Medicine Bow, and Routt National Forests, and through small, mountain and ranching communities.

The Steamboat All Arts Festival is the newest and most collaborative event in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It is a four-day event that highlights the amazing arts and culture in the Yampa Valley while featuring nationally-renowned artists. When it comes to history and tradition, few entities in Routt County can compare with the Routt County Fair held this August 18-21, 2011. Before there was a ski mountain, condos, vacation homes, youth baseball tournaments, mountain biking, kayaking and all the other things we have become known for, there were men and women who came to Routt County to carve livings out of this rough, mountainous terrain. They farmed. They ranched. They survived and laid the foundations for the communities we enjoy today. The fair rightfully honors the agriculture heritage and traditions of those settlers. Held on the same site since 1914, it is one of the longest-running events in the Routt County. Don’t miss the Demolition Derby on Friday, August 19th at 7:30.

Classic Car Cruise

Classic cars abound in Steamboat Springs. Collectors love to show off those cars by doing a fun cruise once a month during the summer on the third Thursday each month. Drivers gather at the Stockbridge Center on Lincoln Ave just past Lincoln Park about 6 pm. Anyone is welcome to join the group. The group will then cruise through downtown, up to and around the mountain area and back downtown to the Courthouse at 6th and Lincoln to park and show off their cars, usually around 7 pm. The only downside of the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Steamboat Springs Colorado is that you have to get out of bed before the roosters crow . . . .the upside of getting out of bed that early is that the you get to see the most beautiful sunrise of the year! The 2011 Hot Air Balloon Rodeo takes place on JUly 9th and 10th.

**DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA.

Meet early at the launch field and watch the preperation and take off of these amazing and colorful balloons! Approximately 9/10 of a mile south of Walton Creek Road on Highway 40. 35565 South Highway 40 the property is better known as the Bald Eagle Lake or Water Ski Lake. There is no public parking at the actual event.

*FREE TRANSPORTATION IS PROVIDED FROM THE MEADOWS PARKING LOT. There will be vendors selling souvenirs, coffee and breakfast items on the launch field so plan to come on down and check out the balloons inflating.

*Parking is FREE for the Saturday and Sunday morning. Park at the Meadows parking lot on Pine Grove Road. Transportation from the Meadows Lot to the event is also FREE.
Due to the event's convenient location on the edge of town, we encourage spectators walk, ride their bikes or take the shuttle from the hotel or lodge. There are no dogs allowed at this event anywhere.

After you have watched the balloons float up and fly away (and taken some awesome photos) meet everyone at West Lincoln Park for Steamboat's largest arts and crafts festival. Art in the Park takes place on Saturday from 9-5 P.M. and on Sunday from 9-4 P.M.

The Tour de Steamboat is a century+ non competitive road ride that starts and ends in beautiful Steamboat Springs, CO. The initial event was hosted as a race by the legendary frame builder, Kent Eriksen, in the late 1970’s. The event was resurrected in 2004 as a non competitive road ride by Kent’s wife, Katie Lindquist and partner Brad Cusenbary. In 2008, Katie and Brad decided to turn the event into a benefit ride to not only raise money but awareness to the Sunshine Kids Foundation.

2011 will be the 15th year of the TCS World Series. The 18U World Series returns to Steamboat Springs after being in Park City, Utah the last 7 years.. In 2010 45 participated in the 18U. We anticipate 60 teams in 2011. Teams participating in the World Series come from Triple Crown qualifying tournaments that are managed by Triple Crown or one of their franchise territory owners, or awarded At Large Berths from state that do not have a qualifying event system. Most of the tournament teams come from California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico but almost every state West of the Mississippi is represented.

The Denver Post Ride The Rockies is an annual bicycle tour that takes 2,000 cyclists on a week-long trek through Colorado's Rocky Mountains. In its 26th year, cyclists will be treated to 6 scenic mountain passes, 1 loop ride and 22,000 feet of vertical gain over the course of 6 days and 412 miles. Cyclists will begin their journey in the picturesque mountain town of Crested Butte and finish on the historic streets of Georgetown, Colorado.

Ride the Rockies arrives in Steamboat on June 14th after a 80 mile leg from Edwards to Steamboat. June 15th involves the scenic Steamboat Loop ride of 52miles. Then onto Granby on June 16th.

If you are planning a ski trip out west this winter - - you want to go where the snow is dry and deep and the lift lines are short, with a 100 inch base as of Feb 6th, your best bet is heading to Steamboat Springs!

The summit base measurement at the Steamboat Ski Resort inched passed the 100-inch mark this morning, Sunday, February 06, 2011, tallying 103, thanks to a foot and a half of Champagne Powder® snow.

“Today is being called Super Sunday due to all the Champagne Powder snow that has fallen in the past 24-hours,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “At this pace, Steamboat will reach the 300 inches mark for the season in no time.”

Steamboat is in a storm cycle that as of 5am yielded 14 inches at mid-mountain and 18 inches at the summit in the past 24-hours; 17 inches at mid-mountain and 22 at the summit in the past 48-hours; and 29 inches at mid-mountain and 31 inches at the summit this month. The resort is reporting a 78-inch base at mid-mountain and 103-inch base at the summit on powder conditions.

“Steamboat is arguably enjoying some of the best snow conditions in the Rocky Mountains with one of the largest mid-mountain bases of the major Colorado destination resorts,” continued Diamond. “With a variety of special packages, passes and programs, there are plenty of ways to ensure you share in the excitement of this season’s legendary Champagne Powder snow.”

Mountain snow continues through this evening as the first in a series of storms exits the region. The next storm to bring significant snowfall to the mountains is expected Monday evening through Tuesday evening. Snowfall will increase again on Monday evening as the next upper level disturbance approaches from the northwest. In addition, a cold front at the surface will push into the northern portion of western Colorado that evening.

It all began 37 years ago when Billy Kidd, Steamboat's Director of Skiing, and Larry Mahan, six-time All-Around World Champion cowboy, decided to invite a few of the Pro-Rodeo stars to Steamboat for a day of skiing. The cowboys had such a great time that the Downhill has become the most popular event of the season with over 100 of the best professional rodeo cowboys competing in the most unique ski rodeo in the country. Sponsored by Bud Light, the Cowboy Downhill is always scheduled to coincide with the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

The Cowboy Downhill will a late afternoon event. Public Festivities run in Gondola square from 12:00 to 4:00pm in the Bud Light Tents and at the Bear River Bar & Grill, with live musical entertainment from Sundog. The Slalom will begin at 4:00pm followed by the Stampede. We'll wrap up the evening at 5:30pm with the Cowboy Downhill Awards

Beginning as the organizing committee for the first Winter Carnival, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) has maintained the Winter Carnival as a service to the community since 1914. The Winter Carnival started as a way to help residents cope with cabin fever during the height of the winter season. The event continues to this day as a way to celebrate winter; as a reason for neighbors to gather; and as an opportunity for everyone to experience a piece of Ski Town USA® history and tradition.

This annual celebration includes a variety of events that embrace our western heritage and highlight Steamboat's tradition of winter sports. The festivities include such events as: Ski Jumping competitions, a Snowboarding Jam Session, the Soda Pop Slalom, a Tubing Party, the Diamond Hitch Parade which includes the High School band on skis, the Street Events on Lincoln Avenue, and the Night Extravaganza at Howelsen Hill with a brilliant fireworks display and the famous Lighted Man.

National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) will host its annual "Summit" at Steamboat Springs, Colorado from February 26 - March 5, 2011. Up to 5,000 skiers, riders and winter enthusiasts from more than 75 NBS clubs across the nation and the United Kingdom will participate in this weeklong event. The NBS held its first annual gathering in 1973. Steamboat has served as the host resort for NBS annual gatherings on five previous occasions - in 1978, 1982, 1989, 1995 and 2007. The resort has also served as the host site for many NBS regional and club trips.

Several weeks ago we posted a blog article about the snow predictions for the upcoming ski season in Steamboat Springs Colorado . . . "The weather experts have issued a La Nina advisory going into 2011, and the last season that happened in Colorado (07-08), I was skiing waist deep powder all winter long!"

It appears that those predictions are coming true, because the Steamboat Ski Resort is closing out the month of November as the snowiest on record! The ski mountain is reporting a mid-mountain base of 47 inches and a 62-inch base at the summit, which is currently the deepest base of any resort in Colorado!

Backcountry Skiing on Rabbit Ears Pass - Steamboat Springs Colorado

Early season skiing got off to great start this past week in many parts of Colorado. The higher elevations around Steamboat Springs received 2-3 feet of snow from the last storm system, and if you were able to get out early this week, good turns were easy to find! We headed to Rabbit Ears pass and then to North Walton Peak for our first turns of the year. The west side of Rabbit Ears Pass is designated as Non-motorized so if you want a more peaceful backcountry experience, this is the side to stay on. The East side of Rabbit Ears Pass is designated as Motorized / Mixed-use, so later on in the winter (or in a few weeks) there will be a lot of snowmobile traffic.

Other good winter trails off of Rabbit Ears Pass include:

Hogan Park Trail (take this trail from the pass to the back side of Steamboat Ski Resort - 7.5 miles)
Bruce's Trail - great early season cross country skiing/skate skiing on groomed trail
South Summit Loop
West Summit Loop

Winter Storm Warning in Effect for Steamboat Springs Colorado - Oct 25

Winter has officially arrived in the mountains of Colorado! Two ski resorts are already open (Loveland and Arapahoe Basin) and all the others will be opening within the next 20-30 days. The Steamboat Ski Resort officially opens in 29 more days, but if this snow keeps coming, I guarantee we will be making some turns sooner than that (with or without the lifts)!

If you live in the Ski town, you will spend more time talking about the weather than sports, politics and work! My favorite place to get the latest updates on snow totals is a forecast that meteorologist Joel Gratz puts out called the Colorado Powder Forecast - see below for his latest projections (15-20 inches for Steamboat!!):

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The big storm is on track for today through Tuesday night.

It was very warm overnight, with temperatures above freezing at 10,000ft so any precipitation that fell below this was rain or some type of gobbly-gook mixed rain/snow. The cold front will hit I-70 around around 8-9am and push from northwest to southeast through the rest of the state my midday.

Monday AM > Monday PM = Very cold and windy with snow down to most valleys by midday Monday. After a few hours of very heavy snow and blizzard conditions on Monday AM, snow will lighten in the valleys but continue in the mountains through the night. Total accumulations from the Elk mountains (Aspen) and north on Tues AM could be 10-20″.

Tuesday AM > Wednesday AM = Clearing for most mountains, but still light snow from I-70 to the north with new snow of 3-6″ by Wednesday sunrise.

Wednesday AM > Friday = Sunny, still windy and cool in the north.

Steamboat's Town Challenge Mountain Bike Series Starts today!

Steamboat Spring's first mountain bike race of the season takes place at Marabou Ranch today. This course is typically closed to the public, but the past week it has been open to all and the locals have definitely been taking advantage of it! The 12 mile course snakes around one of the most scenic areas in the valley and offers incredible view of the Ski Mountain, Elk river, Flat tops, Hahns Peak, Buffalo Pass and Sand Mountain. The Spring runoff has everything lush and green and makes for some spectacular scenery.

What: Town Challenge Mountain Bike series

When: Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. today. Children’s race begins at 5:30 p.m. with adult races at 6 p.m.

21 inches in 24 hours = Lots of Smiling Faces in Steamboat Springs Colorado!

Mother Nature took care of the Steamboat Locals this morning with 21 inches of the fluffy white stuff in a 24 hour period. We are only 7 days into April, and I think this might be the best month we have had all year! I am pretty sure the city of Steamboat Springs was closed for business until 11am today - - everyone in town either used their "powder clause", called in sick . .or simply said work smirk, I am heading to the Ski Mountain.

I don't have any great face shots of us skiing or some sweet lines to show you . . . because you don't have time to stop and take pictures on a day like today, especially when every local in Steamboat is after your powder stash!! A local's powder day is similar to the video game Pac-Man . . .gobble up as much you can as fast as you can, and boy did it go fast!

The picture below is the lift line for Morningside - - typically one of those lifts you just ski up to and sit down on the first chair that comes by. This lift provides access to some great terrain off the top of Storm Peak and is the only lift that takes you there . . . . as you can see from the hordes of skiers/boarders, everyone had the same idea!

Winter Weather Advisory for Steamboat Springs Colorado

Heavier snow should fall in the mountains of Utah and southern Wyoming with 8 to 16 inches possible through Friday. Parts of northern Colorado (Steamboat Ski Resort) could also see accumulations approaching 12 inches.

NorAm Cup skiing to begin today at Steamboat Ski Resort

Steamboat Springs — Arapahoe Basin’s loss turned into Steamboat Springs’ gain.

The final event for the NorAm Cup will start today at Mayer’s Mogul Run on Voo Doo ski run at Steamboat Ski Area.

Qualification rounds start at 10 a.m. today and Friday, with finals scheduled to begin at about 2 p.m. Today is a singles moguls day, and Friday is a dual moguls day.

The event originally was scheduled to be held at Arapahoe Basin, but the ski area couldn’t get its run up and going because a lack of snow depth.

With the Steamboat course already playing host to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in December and serving as the training ground for the U.S. Freestyle Moguls Ski Team in early February — the team then won three medals in Vancouver, British Columbia — Steamboat was the perfect choice.

Telemark World Cup in Steamboat Springs Colorado

53 skiers from 11 countries will compete in a Telemark World Cup event at Steamboat Springs starting Feb 21st. Sprint races are Sunday and Tuesday at Howelson Hill and a giant slalom race is Monday at the Steamboat SkI Resort on Sitz/See Me runs. The event then relocates to Keystone Colorado for a four day leg of racing.

Steamboat Springs will host the 2010 NCAA Division I Western Regional Championships featuring the best collegiate skiing athletes in the Rocky Mountain Region. Classical and Freestyle Nordic races as well as Slalom will be decided at historic Howelsen Hill and the Giant Slalom will take place on Mount Werner. A month later, Steamboat Springs will also host the NCAA Championships, March 10-13th, for the sixth time.

Backcountry Skiing Near Steamboat Springs, Colorado!

The snow for the Steamboat Ski Resort fell 1 day later than forecasted this weekend, so we drove north toward Clark, Colorado to skin up Hahn's Peak. We were totally surprised at how much snow had fallen over night and while we were skinning up the mountain on Saturday - - it was definitely knee to thigh deep and the turns were well worth the effort! We cheated a little bit and used snowmobiles to climb up to the base of Hahn's Peak - - and then we skinned the rest of the way to treeline. We skied the south/south-west side of this mtn and made 2 laps of a little over 1,000 feet each before calling it a day. We were not able to enjoy any views during our trip - everything was socked in with the Snow storm - but we will back again on a blue bird day!

Winter Carnival: The 97th Winter Carnival takes over Steamboat Springs February 4-7th with family friendly games and activities including the annual parade down Lincoln Avenue, featuring the only high school marching band on skis in the world, and the fan-favorite night extravaganza, featuring the legendary lighted man and fireworks display at Howelsen Hill!

The festivities include such events as an outdoor adventure film festival and/or slide show series, ski jumping, dual slalom bicycle race, snowboarding jam session, tubing party, pancake breakfast, soda pop slalom, telemark revival and international muzzleloading biathlon. Dont Miss Steamboat's annual Torch Light Parade & Fireworks on New Years Eve!

2 of my favorite places to watch the torchlight parade and fireworks take a little bit of effort (and some warm clothes), but the vantage points are well worth it! Option #1 is to skin/snowshoe from the bottom of the Steamboat Ski Resort to the top of the Christie 6 pack chair where you will have a view of the entire city and the fireworks (you will not see so much of the torchlight parade because you will sitting higher on the ski mountain). Option #2 would be to skin/snowshoe/hike to the quarry on Emerald Mtn (the mtn above Howelsen Hill) where you will be able to view both the fireworks and the torchlight parade from an unobstructed view across town (too far to see people, but you will see everything that is lit up). Give yourself 30-45 minutes to get to both of these vantage points - and enjoy the show!

SPRINT TORCHLIGHT PARADES & FIREWORKS

The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School treats tourists and locals to spectacular on-snow parades down the mountain lit only by torches. The parades are in celebration of a holiday or local event throughout the season. In conjunction with the torchlight parades, a fireworks display will illuminate the sky providing a perfect ending to the evening. Again this year, the young ones get a chance to ski down the mountain and join in the excitement as a special finale to the Desperados Ski Week program. The Desperados Torchlight Parade will also be December 31st.

The champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.

Take a couple tree laps during a Steamboat storm, and you’ll quickly understand why the term “champagne powder” was coined there. Start off your tasting tour on the gentle pitches of the Twilight Glades. It’s sort of like a swig from a bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil—the experience is soft yet intensely flavored and only mildly desperate. Wipe your face on your sleeve and make your way over to the Pony Express lift to build up your tolerance. The tighter pines will force your turns to be short and sweet, like the taste of blanc de noir sucked through a Slurpee straw. After a few more runs, the champagne-pow buzz kicks in. You might fall on your ass more than 20 times trying to get down Morningside’s hairy chutes, but the champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.

Eligibility: Steamboat's Kids Ski Free™ and Grandkids Ski Free programs enable children 12 years of age and under to ski free the same number of days as their parents/grandparents when parents/grandparents purchase a 5-or-more day adult lift ticket at regular prices. Discounted lift ticket products are not always eligible for this program, Seniors and Young Seniors must purchase a regular priced adult ticket to be eligible for this program. One free child per paid parent/grandparent.

Availability: Kids Ski Free™ is available the entire ski and snowboard season!

Proof of Age: Proof of age is required for the Kids Ski Free™ program of all 11 and 12-year-olds, or for children who appear to be that old to the ticket agent. If proof of age is not provided, the parent will be required to purchase teen lift tickets at the respective season rates. If at a later point in time, proof of age is provided (birth certificate, passport, etc.), a full refund will be made.

Kids Fly Free: That's right, Kids 12 & under can Fly Free* on select Airlines to Steamboat with a qualifying parent purchase.
