Parking at Strawberry is limited, so consider the shuttle. Try Sweet Pea Tours, which will take you the 25 minutes from Steamboat to the springs, for $40 per adult. NorAm Cup skiing to begin today at Steamboat Ski Resort

Steamboat Springs — Arapahoe Basin’s loss turned into Steamboat Springs’ gain.

The final event for the NorAm Cup will start today at Mayer’s Mogul Run on Voo Doo ski run at Steamboat Ski Area.

Qualification rounds start at 10 a.m. today and Friday, with finals scheduled to begin at about 2 p.m. Today is a singles moguls day, and Friday is a dual moguls day.

The event originally was scheduled to be held at Arapahoe Basin, but the ski area couldn’t get its run up and going because a lack of snow depth.

With the Steamboat course already playing host to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in December and serving as the training ground for the U.S. Freestyle Moguls Ski Team in early February — the team then won three medals in Vancouver, British Columbia — Steamboat was the perfect choice.

53 skiers from 11 countries will compete in a Telemark World Cup event at Steamboat Springs starting Feb 21st. Sprint races are Sunday and Tuesday at Howelson Hill and a giant slalom race is Monday at the Steamboat SkI Resort on Sitz/See Me runs. The event then relocates to Keystone Colorado for a four day leg of racing.

Backcountry Skiing Near Steamboat Springs, Colorado!

The snow for the Steamboat Ski Resort fell 1 day later than forecasted this weekend, so we drove north toward Clark, Colorado to skin up Hahn's Peak. We were totally surprised at how much snow had fallen over night and while we were skinning up the mountain on Saturday - - it was definitely knee to thigh deep and the turns were well worth the effort! We cheated a little bit and used snowmobiles to climb up to the base of Hahn's Peak - - and then we skinned the rest of the way to treeline. We skied the south/south-west side of this mtn and made 2 laps of a little over 1,000 feet each before calling it a day. We were not able to enjoy any views during our trip - everything was socked in with the Snow storm - but we will back again on a blue bird day!

They are predicting 3-8 inches of Snow in Steamboat Colorado / Rabbit Ears tonight (Thursday 1/21/09) and 3-5 Friday . . keep your fingers crossed that they miss it on the low side!

Steamboat Springs - 97th Annual Winter Carnival!

Winter Carnival: The 97th Winter Carnival takes over Steamboat Springs February 4-7th with family friendly games and activities including the annual parade down Lincoln Avenue, featuring the only high school marching band on skis in the world, and the fan-favorite night extravaganza, featuring the legendary lighted man and fireworks display at Howelsen Hill!

The festivities include such events as an outdoor adventure film festival and/or slide show series, ski jumping, dual slalom bicycle race, snowboarding jam session, tubing party, pancake breakfast, soda pop slalom, telemark revival and international muzzleloading biathlon. The street events with horse and rider pulling kids on skis down main street, and the night show with a huge fireworks display and the famous Lighted Man, take place Saturday followed by The Diamond Hitch Parade featuring the Skiing Steamboat Springs Skiing High School band.

Cowboy Downhill: The 36th annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill moves to a later start time on January 19th, pitting cowboys and cowgirls against the snow and the stars. The event is free to the public and includes a slalom race, the Stampede and a free concert from Reckless Kelly in Gondola Square.

The majority of the Holiday traffic will be leaving today, but that does not appear to be stopping Mother Nature from dumping another layer of champagne powder on the Steamboat Ski Resort. Dont Miss Steamboat's annual Torch Light Parade & Fireworks on New Years Eve!

2 of my favorite places to watch the torchlight parade and fireworks take a little bit of effort (and some warm clothes), but the vantage points are well worth it! Option #1 is to skin/snowshoe from the bottom of the Steamboat Ski Resort to the top of the Christie 6 pack chair where you will have a view of the entire city and the fireworks (you will not see so much of the torchlight parade because you will sitting higher on the ski mountain). Option #2 would be to skin/snowshoe/hike to the quarry on Emerald Mtn (the mtn above Howelsen Hill) where you will be able to view both the fireworks and the torchlight parade from an unobstructed view across town (too far to see people, but you will see everything that is lit up). Give yourself 30-45 minutes to get to both of these vantage points - and enjoy the show!

SPRINT TORCHLIGHT PARADES & FIREWORKS

The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School treats tourists and locals to spectacular on-snow parades down the mountain lit only by torches. The parades are in celebration of a holiday or local event throughout the season. In conjunction with the torchlight parades, a fireworks display will illuminate the sky providing a perfect ending to the evening. Again this year, the young ones get a chance to ski down the mountain and join in the excitement as a special finale to the Desperados Ski Week program. The Desperados Torchlight Parade will also be December 31st.

The champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.

Take a couple tree laps during a Steamboat storm, and you’ll quickly understand why the term “champagne powder” was coined there. Start off your tasting tour on the gentle pitches of the Twilight Glades. It’s sort of like a swig from a bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil—the experience is soft yet intensely flavored and only mildly desperate. Wipe your face on your sleeve and make your way over to the Pony Express lift to build up your tolerance. The tighter pines will force your turns to be short and sweet, like the taste of blanc de noir sucked through a Slurpee straw. After a few more runs, the champagne-pow buzz kicks in. You might fall on your ass more than 20 times trying to get down Morningside’s hairy chutes, but the champagne is so crisp you won’t even care about the pain the morning after.
