Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in scenic Colorado, Steamboat Springs is a hiker’s paradise in the summer and bustling ski town in the winter. This charming mountain town offers something for everyone — from outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers to those who prefer fine dining and the comfort of a roaring fire inside.

Downtown Steamboat Springs is a particular draw for visitors, with a wide array of restaurants, shops, and entertainment that run right along the Lincoln Avenue district.

Assuming you’ve only got one day to explore Main Street, we recommend working in five activities: dining, drinking, entertainment, outdoors, and dessert—in no particular order.

Outdoors—Biking, Hiking, & River Fun

Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty of options that are readily accessible via Downtown Steamboat Springs. Enjoy a scenic hike with nothing more than your shoes, bring your bike for a scenic ride through downtown, or rent a slide and scoot down Howelsen Hill.

Hike Emerald Mountain or Yampa Core Trail

A welcoming trek for hikers of any age or experience level, the trip up Emerald Mountain clocks in at just under four miles total. A relatively easy ‘out and back’ journey, the trail slowly ascends and winds its way up Emerald Mountain, past beautiful wildflower fields and wide-open vistas of the Yampa Valley. This particular path is pet-friendly and is easily accessible from Main Street.

For a more leisurely and scenic stroll, hit the Yampa River Core Trail, which runs parallel to the glistening Yampa River. The path is paved and runs about 7.5 total miles in length. Along the way, stop to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Yampa River Botanic Garden, a stunning six-acre sanctuary boasting over 40 gorgeous gardens.

If ease and convenience are more your style, try biking your way around town! Bike rentals are readily available throughout Steamboat Springs, though you can certainly BYOB (bike, of course). Downtown Steamboat Springs is easy to navigate and offers plenty of bike parking. The Yampa River Core Trail is another easy option for a leisurely ride.

For a challenge, ride over to Emerald Mountain and give your legs a workout ascending the trail. The best part about biking Emerald Mountain is you’ll have a fun ride back down the mountainside.

Ski or Slide Down Howelsen Hill

Howelsen Hill is one of Colorado’s most unique and treasured recreational ski areas—and it’s not hard to figure out why! Located just across the Yampa River from downtown Steamboat district, Howelsen Hill is a unique destination for skiers as it features several ski jumps for aerial skills. Skiing isn’t the only activity the hill is known for; snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowbiking, and snow tubing are also popular events.

If you’re visiting Steamboat Springs in the summer or fall, don’t worry, there’s an activity for you, too! Book a ride down the famous Alpine Slide—aka “The Howeler”, where riders can enjoy a thrilling 2,400-foot track that winds down the mountainside.
