The best lakes near & around Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Whether you are fishing, swimming, exploring, or hiking around lakes, Steamboat Springs offers some of the most beautiful lakes near and around the city. You can drive through historic cities like Clark and Hahn’s Peak to arrive at some of the best hiking trails in the area. Many of the national parks have lakes included that are perfect for any outdoor activities that you may find yourself wanting to try out. Here are a few of our favorite spots to check out with lakes.

Steamboat Lake State Park

This recreational area is perfect for the whole family. See the stunning Hahn’s Peak and the beautiful wildflowers from anywhere in the park, and enjoy the park year-round. There are many activities to do in both summer and winter. Try out boating, fishing, waterskiing, and many other watersports. While in the winter you can experience the lake frozen which is ideal for a snowmobile ride or a cross country skiing adventure to a fishing hole, where the well-stocked lake offers ice fishing and beautiful cutthroat trout. The park is open in the summer Friday to Sunday from 8 am-6 pm and Monday through Thursday from 8 Am-5 Pm. In the winter the park is open daily from 8 am-4 pm.

Make sure to check out the Steamboat Lake Marina where you can find boat rentals, fishing licenses, bait, and tackle. There are boat ramps located outside of the marina if you are bringing your own boat.

Pearl Lake State Park

This 167 square acres mountainous park sits at the base of Farwell Mountain and a pine forest about 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs. If you are looking for some of the best hiking trails or camping this is the place for you. You can even experience the continental divide on your hike. Take a day trip from Steamboat to check out their park and campsites, or even stay there with your camper for a day or two before heading back into the city. The campground has 38 sites and two yurts to choose from. However, once the snow has fallen the campsite closes down. Enjoy all of the outdoor activities like paddleboarding, flyfishing, swimming, or in the winter enjoying snowshoeing or snowmobiles. During the summer the hours of operation are from Friday to Sunday 8 am-6 pm and from Monday to Thursday from 8 am- 5 pm. During the winter the park is open daily from 8 am- 4 pm.

Yampa River State Park

The Yampa River State Park offers some of Colorado’s iconic river runs for rafts, kayaks, paddleboards and is home to a few small rapids. There are more than 13 points in the state park that provide access to the river for anglers, birding, rafters, naturalists, and hikers. The Yampa Valley River offers many wet water adventures with several different levels of white water rafting. Not only do they have an area from rafting and watersports, but they also have wonderful hiking trails and nature trails. The Yampa River State Park is also a paradise for anglers who are looking for cold water fishing. You may even be able to find fish creek falls and explore some of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The hours of operation are from 8 am to 4:15 pm daily.

Stagecoach State Park

The Stagecoach State Park is located on a 771-acre reservoir sprawl across a mountain valley 17 miles south of Steamboat Springs. It was formed by a dam on the upper Yampa River and is the perfect place to bird watch and stare into the clouds. The park offers many recreation areas such as mountain biking, swimming, and sometimes even horseback riding. Boaters enjoy taking powerboats, sailboats, canoes, and stand up paddleboards all in the lake. There are park officers that will loan oat ice fishing gear if you didn’t stop by the outfitters beforehand. This lake is rumored to have some of the best fishing in Routt County. The hours of operations are 8 am -4:30 pm daily.
